Have you heard what many are calling the greatest prayer ever? It’s the prayer that was offered before the start of the NASCAR Federation Auto Parts 300 race in Nashville over the weekend:
The Rev. Joe Nelms not only thanks God for Ford, Toyota and Dodge – to which Drive On says “Hallelujah!” – but then starts almost reading the sponsor’s stickers off the sides of the car. He mentions Sunoco Racing Fuel and General Motors Performance Technology, for instance.
And after thanking the Almighty for his “smokin’ hot wife”, he concluded with “Boogity, boogity, boogity”…
While Nelms received a few negative comments, surprisingly, most of the responses were positive. Many true believers said we need more of this kind of upbeat spirit. Many backsliders said this made them consider returning to the pews.
Now, since I’ve given up on Christianity, I don’t much care about this guy’s eternal soul. But I will say, this is the kind of thing Moses was talking about when he said, “Don’t take the Lord’s name in vain.” And maybe why Jesus said, “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
