Did Casey Anthony kill her two-year-old daughter Caylee in the summer of 2008? Probably, but that certainly isn’t good enough – nor should it be; to throw her in jail for the rest of her life. So many people were convinced Casey was guilty, and so many people were furious when the jury did not agree with them. Here’s the thing. The prosecution failed to provide a compelling enough case to gain a conviction. Maybe they did a lousy job, maybe the evidence just wasn’t there. That’s debatable. What’s not debatable is that Casey was found not guilty. Case closed.

An even more important case is now before the American people: What to do about the debt ceiling. Must we raise the debt ceiling to avoid a financial cataclysm? Probably, but that certainly isn’t good enough – nor should it be; to throw away all the government programs that have been with us for generations in order to hold our fragile union together. So many people are convinced President Obama should concede to all republican demands in order to keep America from going into default, and so many people are furious with the President that he’s been unwilling to do so.

Here’s the thing. Republicans have thus far failed to provide a compelling enough case to the American people that cutting spending alone will save the country. Maybe they’re doing a lousy job, maybe the evidence just isn’t there. That’s debatable. What’s not debatable is that we need to raise the debt ceiling. And if the best deal republicans can get is only 90% of what they want, that should be enough. Case closed.
